Grasshopper is a stunning, remote, back country ridge top ride through some of the best terrain the Willamette has to offer. Super fun descents, scenic meadows, rocky ridge tops and lush old growth forests are hard to beat. Throw in a couple small, punchy creek crossings and you have a full day adventure on your hands.
Due to the remote location, Grasshopper doesn’t see a lot of tires – which makes it more primitive and serene than most trails in the area. Significant work was done on the trail by Trans-Cascadia in recent years – and tour companies have been offering guided tours.
Most people climb up the Grasshopper Meadow trail to start their ride, which can cut off a lot of climbing.

Most of this trail has lots of deadfall, except for the section that completes the Chuksney Mountain loop. I tried from the North trailhead, and turned around after encountering 75 logs in 2 miles. Also tried from the other end, after the Chuksney intersection, and hit a half dozen logs in the first half mile so turned around
Solitude plus views of the Waldo fire. Great trail conditions for a seldom used trail. No dead fall.
